A day before hurricane Irene hit NYC; I decided to take the day off and enjoy the beautiful weather before the storm. First, Claudia & I headed to Orchard Beach, Robert Moses' man-made, mile-long "Riviera of New York". It was both our first visit to Orchard Beach and she didn't disappoint, with a hexagonal boardwalk; a bandshell for concerts; 26 tennis courts; paddleball, and basketball; and the outlying, heavily wooded Pelham Bay, three times the size of Central Park.
We worked out our appetite and 4 hours later and a short 5 minute drive away. We landed at my favorite little getaway, City Island.
City Island is a small community at the edge of New York City located just beyond Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx and surrounded by the waters of the Long Island Sound and Eastchester Bay. With Execution Light to the northeast and Stepping Stones Lighthouse to the south, City Island has a rich nautical history, much of it preserved by the Historical Society and Museum.
For more information on City Island read HERE and you can even watch the movie with the same name shot on location.
